Lodewijk de Waal: New chair IRC Governing Board

Updated - Thursday 24 November 2005

Mr. Lodewijk de Waal has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Governing Board of the IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre. He has taken over this supervisory post from Mr. Joop Hoekman on 1 October 2005.

Mr. de Waal (1950) stepped down in May 2005 as Chairperson of FNV, the largest trade union federation in the Netherlands, after a 32-year career in unions. In this period he occasionally handled problems of trade unions in various developing countries. He is the first chairman in IRC’s history coming from civil society, rather than a ministerial background.

IRC facilitates the creation, sharing and use of knowledge so that sector staff and organizations can better support poor men, women and children in developing countries to obtain water and sanitation services they will use and can sustain.
