Kenya: Moyo school has no toilet, ecosan project fails
Updated - Tuesday 20 September 2005
The Moyo Technical Institute (MTI) has locked out the students from using the modern environmentally friendly ecosan toilet. "We have locked the toilet after two weeks use because students started misusing it by pouring water, using stones and others were using leaves to clean themselves, which is not allowed in ecosan toilets. We asked the students to bring five rolls of toilet paper but they refused," Saverio Anyumbe, the deputy Principal said.
The old pit latrines were filled up two months ago but due to laxity of the students, they were unable to open the new ones which cost KES 5m (EUR 55,4 thousand) to construct, says Anyumbe. According to him, the institution had admitted 316 students but more joined daily.
The district education officer, Michael Mali, declined to comment, saying he was tired of press questions. The district secretary for education, Mildred Ochokoru, blamed the school administration and the ministry.
