Nigeria: bill on water policy underway

Updated - Tuesday 14 June 2005

A bill on water policy will soon be presented to the National Assembly for deliberations. This new bill would allow the private sector to fully participate in the building of dams, purification and transmission of clean water to homes. According to the Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Water Resources, Hon. Abayomi Sowande Collins, the amount required by government to provide clean and drinking water all over the country is so enormous that it would take the entire budget of the country for a whole year. The NGO Pan African Vision for the Environment (PAVE), has condemned the action of Lagos State government for not involving the grassroot level in its proposed water sector reform.
