Cleaning of wells

Arun Kumar Singh, comment on Aceh salinated wells

As the wells were polluted by the sea water that rose and filled the wells in a short period the pollutants are: sea water, debris, sewage, compost and solid waste in that area. First clean the well of the debris and other solid waste that has entered the well and then start pumping. As the seas have calmed down the natural flow which got polluted (mainly with salt) will come back to the wells. Also the salt content of the aquifers is now high. Constant pumping out is the only solution as the addition of fresh water will improve the conditions only temporarily. Secondly constructing check dams on the fresh water gullies and streams near the side of the affected well will add fresh water and dilute the salt content in the wells. This combined with continued high rate pumping out of water is the only long term feasible solution to the problem.
