Describes and analyzes a community-based sanitation project carried out in a low-income urban area in Karachi, Pakistan between 1979 and 1986. The emphasis is on the process through which women in the local communities became involved and motivated for sanitation and how this led to wider development efforts. Gives an overview of the impact of the project at national, municipal and community level and examples of other projects which incorporated components of the Baldia project.

Target audience: staff of sanitation projects in low-income urban areas in developing countries
