Tsunami Briefing Programme

Updated - Monday 07 February 2005

On the 13th of January no less than six aid-workers attended the first Tsunami briefing organised by IRC in partnership with WASTE, PRACTICA and NWP. The organisers offered professional information on water solutions, sanitation systems and hygiene promotion strategies. Various designs were presented and demonstrated, indicating in what contexts these designs would be most effective.

The participants came from a wide range of organisations and backgrounds. What they had in common was the uncertainty of their future assignments in the Tsunami affected areas. For this reason an extensive overview of different water and sanitation options was given, so that once their assignments are clear, they can choose, together with future users, the most appropriate design and approach. The participants were also shown how to search for specific water and sanitation information using IRCDOC and they were informed of the possibility of obtaining advice via the WELL enquiry service.

A reader has been compiled containing all the information provided during the briefing session. The aid-workers can use it as a reference guide while out in the field.
